The Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are widely recommended by dentists for the many benefits they offer. Reasons to consider dental implants to replace your missing teeth include:

  • Implants are permanently rooted into the bone. If the prosthetic tooth is damaged, replacing it is a simple, often painless process.
  • Implants restore chewing force to the jawbone, which is necessary to prevent jaw bone loss and preserve a youthful facial structure.
  • Implants protect your alignment by preventing teeth from drifting into the open space left by a missing tooth.
  • Implants can be placed without damaging nearby teeth.
  • Several teeth can be supported on just a few strategically-placed implants.

Types of Dental Implants

A dental implant consists of a titanium post rooted into the jaw, to which a prosthetic is attached. The titanium is biocompatible and fuses to the bone, allowing it to act as a natural tooth root.

While there is little variation between implants, they are used to support different types of prosthetics. The two most common types are:

Single Implants: For single-tooth replacement, one implant is used to support a single prosthetic tooth. This new tooth is custom-made to match your other teeth in color and shape, preserving the natural aesthetic of your smile.

Implant-Supported Dentures: A full dental arch of teeth can be supported by just a few dental implants (typically four to six). These dentures become a permanent fixture, and allow you to eat, speak, and smile without slipping out of place. These dentures can also be cleaned simply by brushing and flossing.

The Dental Implant Process

Dr. Moss begins with a thorough exam to determine whether you are a candidate for dental implants. Since a certain amount of bone density is required, certain procedures, such as bone grafting, may be needed to prepare for an implant.

The implant process happens in two stages. First, the implant(s) is placed into the jaw at a strategic point. In specialized cases, an oral surgeon is brought in to perform the implant procedure.

While the implant fuses into place and the surrounding soft tissue heals, a dental lab crafts the prosthetic tooth. Once it arrives and the healing process is complete, the prosthetic can be attached, and is immediately ready to function as a new tooth.
